“There are a few things that you remember throughout your entire life. Some things just automatically go down in your mental scrapbook as a day to remember.”
That’s how local Cruises Inc. travel agent Mike Jordan recalled the day last week when he had the privilege of meeting his idol, Sponge Bob Square Pants.
“I don’t know if I’ll wash this hand again,” Jordan said after spending just a few minutes with the poriferan superstar. “Bob was really nice. He’s just a guy like you and me…well, except that he’s a sponge.”
Sponge Bob made his personal appearance aboard the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas as part of a special introductory cruise highlighting the ship’s new deployment to the Port of Los Angeles/San Pedro where it has now started weekly 7-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera and the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.
“Bob (he doesn’t like to be called “sponge”) said they had such a great cruise on the Mariner earlier this year when Royal Caribbean did a Nickelodeon TV cruise, that they’ll be doing it again.”
Indeed, Royal Caribbean will have two Nickelodeon cruises this year where kids of all ages can meet their favorite cartoon characters and other personalities while enjoying a fantastic trip aboard the line’s terrific ships. Billed as “7 days of sun, surf, and slime,” the first will be on the West Coast aboard the Mariner on July 26 followed by an Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami aboard the Freedom of the Seas on August 9.
We’ve cruised Royal Caribbean several times, and had sailed aboard the Mariner before, but it was fantastic then and it’s fantastic now.
At 3,114 passengers and 138,000 tons, the Mariner of the Seas was Royal Caribbean’s largest ship before the line introduced the huge Freedom-class ships last year. Even though it’s not the largest anymore, it’s much bigger than most other ships on any line and has a lot to offer.
We were only on the ship for 2 nights this time, sailing on a “cruise to nowhere,” but we had a chance to enjoy the fantastic ice show, featuring world class skaters and choreography, and danced to the best Salsa band we’ve ever heard in the ship’s Schooner Bar. We also danced to the ship’s live reggae band during our “Sail Away” party as the ship left the harbor in San Pedro and we experienced one of two Broadway-style revue shows in the ship’s main showroom, the Savoy Theatre.
Another great feature of this ship is the Royal Promenade, a somewhat serpentine walkway running down the center of the ship’s interior that resembles a neighborhood street lined with a coffee house, wine bar, ship logo shops, and much more. Plus, in addition to the pool on the upper decks of the ship, there’s also a miniature golf course, rock climbing wall, basketball court, spa/solarium pool, and plenty of space to just soak up the sun. This trip was a wonderful reminder of how much we enjoyed the Mariner when we sailed her in 2004.
Still, Royal Caribbean keeps building bigger and bigger ships. The Freedom of the Seas, which hosts the other Nickelodeon Family Cruise in August, and her sister ships, the Independence of the Seas and the Liberty of the Seas, dwarf the Mariner with
passenger capacity of 3,634 at 160,000 tons. These ships feature a wave simulator where you can learn to surf, a water park, full size boxing ring, ice rink and cantilevered hot tubs that actually extend off the side of the ship with views of the ocean from 10 stories up!
Apparently none of this is enough…Royal Caribbean will introduce an even larger class of ships this December with the maiden voyage of the Oasis of the Seas. The ship will weigh in at a whopping 220,000 tons and a capacity of 5,400 passengers.
Royal Caribbean has a lot to offer, as do almost all of the cruise lines sailing today, and it’s a lot different than The Love Boat days of the 70’s.
And, hey… on one of those Nickelodeon trips, maybe you’ll meet Bullwinkle!
Have a great week, and until next time…get out the map!
