Top 5 Packing Tips for the Perfect Summer Escape

As airline baggage fees continue to rise with no end in sight, creative packing strategies have become the budget-savvy traveler’s best friend. With airlines charging upwards of $75 dollars for a second bag and some even charging for the first, packing lightly is now a must.

Mike and Darlene Jordan, local CruiseOne independent vacation specialists, frequently consult with their clients on the best way to pack for their travels. Here are the Top 5 tips to save space and money:

1. Make a list. Before packing anything, create a list with each day of your vacation and what you will need. Having a list saves time, creates less hassle and even more excitement about your upcoming trip. Plus, having a list can save you from realizing you’ve included ten pairs of underwear for your 3-night cruise!

2. Always pack full outfits. It is easy to throw items randomly into a suitcase that you “might need”, but it is more efficient to include outfits for your respective days on the road or at sea. Remember your accessories, shoes, hats and more.

3. Keep it simple! If your vacation includes sun and sand, don’t overpack sweaters and pants. Most likely, you will end up in a bathing suit and flip flops with a suitcase of heavy (and costly, remember the airline fees!) clothes you never use.

4. Don’t overdo toiletries. Sure, you may love your uber-concentrated overnight moisturizer, but if it’s not a must, leave it at home. Packing only the essentials will save space. And remember, most resorts and cruise ships today offer blow dryers and complimentary amenities (even some created just for them by your favorite cosmetic companies). Don’t forget that airport security policies limit your carry-on liquids (this includes lotions, creams and sprays) to 3 oz. If you don’t want it confiscated, don’t bring it.

5. Finally, don’t stress. Preparing for a trip can be overwhelming, needing to pack for your entire family, clean the house, remember your important documents, find a pet-sitter and more. The ultimate goal is to relax and unwind with your kids, significant other and friends. If you’re organized about your packing, you can save time and money.

Our featured cruise this week is a great DEAL on a 7-night Boston round-trip on the Carnival Glory, June 3, 2012. This is a cruise that most travelers think about for Fall, but we’re offering an early June itinerary for several reasons:

Scenery, History and “CHOWDAH”!

At St. John, NB, learn about the phenomenon of the Reversing Falls, caused by the tremendous rise and fall of the tides of the Bay of Fundy, which are the highest in the world. Adults AND kids will be fascinated by this amazing sight!

Next stop is Halifax, a perfect place for those who are looking for a more adventurous day of exploring. Try sea-kayaking, deep-sea fishing, rock-climbing, windsurfing or canoeing, or go for a coastal hike to view the historic lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove.

Then you’re on to Sydney, Nova Scotia, with museums, historic churches, and a rich WWII history…among the many ways to spend your day there.

All of these possibilities, AND the beautiful coastline along the way…what a great way to start the summer!

Travel Tip #2 –

It’s not enough to just have a passport! Don’t forget to check your passport’s expiration date! You must travel with a passport that expires NO SOONER than 6 months AFTER the trip end date. There are many reasons for this, but one very good one is that if you experience a trip delay or emergency when you’re out of the U.S., you want to be sure that your passport is still valid when you CAN come home. Check your passports now, and you’ll be ready to take advantage of a last minute deal when you’re ready to travel!

Hello Everyone, and Happy Friday!

Last week’s DEAL was a true last minute wonder! This week we’re featuring a DEAL for those of you who like to plan ahead.

We’ve booked clients on a number of River Cruises, and we’ve enjoyed a couple of them ourselves. One was a 16-night cruise and land combo in China, we hosted a group on that one, and everyone loved it! The other was a Rhine River cruise during the Christmas season.

With our experience in river cruising, we’ve learned that you really should book them far in advance, as these ships are very small and the inventory sells out quickly. So, several months ago, we booked group space on a 14-night Viking River Cruise, starting May 8, 2013 in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest.

There are 14 beautiful port stops in between Amsterdam and Budapest, including 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and 13 guided tours included in the cruise fare. All meals onboard are included, as are wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner.

Our cruise will be aboard a brand new ship, the Viking Odin. This is one of the new “long ships”, and it’s design allows for staterooms with real verandahs, in addition to the typical river cruise staterooms with either French balconies or river view windows.

During our last conversation with the cruise line, we were advised that the only inventory left on the ship for this sail date consists of 2 Explorer Suites, 1 Suite, and our group space. That means if someone wants to book this date, the cruise line may request some of our space back.

Our fares include a group disount of between $220 and $320 per person, depending on the category booked!
